What are the duties required in the sixth commandment?
The duties required in the sixth commandment are, all careful studies, and lawful endeavours, to preserve the life of ourselves720 and others721 by resisting all thoughts and purposes,722 subduing all passions,723 and avoiding all occasions,724 temptations,725 and practices, which tend to the unjust taking away the life of any;726 by just defence thereof against violence,727 patient bearing of the hand of God,728 quietness of mind,729 cheerfulness of spirit;730 a sober use of meat,731 drink,732 physic,733 sleep,734 labour,735 and recreations;736 by charitable thoughts,737 love,738 compassion,739 meekness, gentleness, kindness;740 peaceable,741 mild and courteous speeches and behaviour;742 forbearance, readiness to be reconciled, patient bearing and forgiving of injuries, and requiting good for evil;743 comforting and succouring the distressed, and protecting and defending the innocent.744
